Where I was born, the first of May is celebrated with one of the greatest Bavarian customs.

A large birch is cut down in the forest, freed from all branches and bark and decorated with panels to strengthen the place as a symbol of fertility.

I photographed the whole process and the people, not only to be part, but also to record time when customs like this are becoming increasingly rare.
